Potential inspiration
Feb. 14th, 2005 08:10 pmA recent email newsletter that I received contained the question "What inspires you?"
Though I have many answers to that question, the answer that popped into my head and stuck there was "potential".
The more potential something has, the more it inspires me.
A blank book, an empty box, a piece of pretty fabric... these have infinite potential. I find all that potential to be so inspiring. I can feel creativity moving through the raw materials.
Flirting with someone where nothing else can happen is really inspiring. I feel stories in the tension.
A blank screen, a vague idea, a new project; these are inspiring things!
The problem for me becomes that as soon as I begin, the potential is lessened and the inspiration seems to lessen as well. Once I've decided what the blank book will contain, it can no longer contain just anything. Once I've knitted a few hats, there is no longer an infinite number of potential hats, so the inspiration starts to fizzle.
The great thing about LJ is that each new entry contains new potential and, therefore, new inspiration.
