A late weekend update
Since the credit card charging website is down, I can't work, so I'll finally record my wonderful weekend notes.
Russ and I had a wonderful, romantic, fun weekend away. We left Friday night (the only ferry option was 10:25 pm, then it was an hour late) for my aunt and uncle's "cottage" on Salt Spring Island.
I feel so blessed to be able to borrow the cottage. It is a lovely house. The guest room has a king's size bed with an electric blanket, the solarium has heated floors and a fantastic view of the ocean, and there's a hot tub.
We got up Saturday morning and went to the farmers' and artists' market, which was so interesting. People make such beautiful things. I bought a few Xmas and birthday gifts, and a tie-died head scarf for myself.
After a nice lunch, we cruised a few stores and then went back to the cottage to relax and read in the solarium.
For dinner, we went to this (mostly) seafood restaurant. I ate so much of the appetizer and then had a big salad (both had goat cheese in them, which I adore) that I couldn't eat a bite of my entree! But I got to watch Russ eat crab, which is so sexy to watch. I'm vegetarian, so I have no appreciation for crab as a meal, but Russ so obviously revels in it, and it is so hands-on to eat (plus, there's all that melted butter...) that it is delicious to watch him enjoy it.
We watched a DVD (Runaway Jury) and went to that huge bed... I want a bed that big one day! When Russ tries to steal the covers (he rolls over and wraps the blankets around and under himself, like a sausage roll), I can just roll closer to the center of the bed and have both covers and still room to sleep. And I want an electric blanket: you can pre-warm the bed, so there's no icy sheets and freezing toes!
The next morning, we got up early and had fresh baked croissants (Uprisings Bakery in Vancouver sells frozen, unbaked croissants - proof them overnight, then bake them fresh in the morning - and nothing smells or tastes better). Then we ferried over to Victoria. We had perfect weather and the ride over was beautiful... perfect blue sky, crisp wind. We saw seals!
In Victoria, we went to the Royal BC Museum and did the "Eternal Egypt" show. It was so interesting, and well worth the line-ups and crowds. You really get the sense that real humans made the art, as the show includes "works-in-progress" that still have grid-lines on them and student works (ancient doodles).
Then we got in line for the ferry back to the mainland. We were lucky, as they added an 8 pm ferry, so we didn't have to wait until 9 pm.
During all of this, Russ and I had so many great talks. We had a chance to connect and touch base in a way that is so hard to do at home, when it is all too easy to get caught up in the flood of day-to-day needs and activities.
The summary: It was a perfect weekend.
